School Archaeological Survey

West Yorkshire Archaeology Advisory Service.

When we developed our new curriculum we identified external partners who could provide expertise to compliment our children's learning.  Dave Weldrake, Education Outreach Coordinator, now makes regular visits to school to support the teaching of history by developing an understanding of the role which archaeology plays in uncovering the past.

Gildersome Primary's archaeological research plans.

It is our intention to develop this partnership further by taking this learning out of the classroom and into the fields around us. Over the coming years we are planning to conduct an extensive 'field walking' survey of the surrounding area. Pottery will be gathered from surrounding fields and gardens, before being identified and mapped with the help of professional archaeologists. By doing this we hope not only bring archaeology alive for our pupils, but also to contribute to overall knowledge base of the history of our community.

As soon as we have finalised arrangements for the first of these surveys we'll let you know. You will of course be more than welcome to join us.
