School History
Gildersome Primary School was formed in 1984 by the amalgamation of Gildersome Junior School and St. Peter’s Infant School. During their separate histories the Junior School and the Infant School were destroyed by fire in 1978 and 1981 respectively. Our present school, therefore, grew out of the ashes of the former schools to bring new educational hopes and opportunities to the children of the village and its environs.
The Phoenix was a mythological bird believed to burn itself out and then rise again from its own ashes with renewed life and vigour. It was, therefore, felt appropriate to use the emblem of the Phoenix for our school badge, symbolising the rise of a new and vigorous school from the ashes of its predecessors.
The original emblem remained in place until the middle of 2006 when a ‘refreshed’ version was created. Two chosen designs were given to the children to consider and a ballot was held involving all our children with the design now appearing on this site receiving overwhelming support.
