summer term week 5

Janet Spencer (j.spencer) on: Reception Blog

This week in reception we have been doing a lot of different activities.
We have been building houses in the junk modelling area for the little pigs, also outside with the loose parts. The children re-enacted being little pigs in houses of sticks and tubes.

We have painted characters in the painting area.

We are preparing a party in the role play areas to say sorry to the giants wife for stealing. So the children have been making lists of things they will need and also writing invitations.

Continuing with our reading in the phonics areas we have placed some captions and pictures, the children have been working together to read the caption and match the picture.

Outside is having a bit of a transformation. We have been doing a lot more hands on play. We have created bird feeders using cereal and string and placing them around the playground. The children went around the grounds collecting leaves and sticks and making people.

Using the drain pipes and tubes we have been thinking about how we can make water or other objects get from one point to another without using our hands.

We are currently doing a science investigation where we have put a seed in a wet paper towel and putting in a zippy wallet in the window. We have been observing what happens to it.

Next week is the last week of this half term. We will be finishing school for a week on Friday the 28th of May and returning on Monday the 7th of June.

Summer term week 4

Janet Spencer (j.spencer) on: Reception Blog

We have had a bit of a busy week in Reception this week. We have looked at the celebration of Ramadan and Eid. The children listened to a story and watched a few CBeebies videos about Eid and Ramadan. Throughout the provision the children have had opportunities to make Eid cards, decorations, and Mehndi patterns. One of our children brought in her prayer mat and talked to us about how she celebrates, she also shared some chocolates with us. Thank you!

Our literacy has continued on the lines of Jack and the Beanstalk but with a twist. We asked the children to look at their story maps and change different aspects of it, so instead of finding a castle at the top some found caves, Schools, towns, and cities. They also changed what they may steal.

Our Maths we are embedding 1 more/ 1 less and looking at teen numbers, saying whether they are odd/even, and the different ways we can make them.

The children really enjoyed our music lesson this week. We introduced them to a few instruments and then took turns to play them within a beat of a song.

A big focus in school is reading, we listen to all the children read within the unit at least once a week. As you can imagine getting through all the children it takes time. We would encourage you to help us! Could you read with your child at least 4 times a week. We understand how busy family life is, you could get your child to read to you whilst making tea or even swap your bedtime story for them reading a little bit to you! Any little time helps.

Have a lovely weekend

summer term week 3

Janet Spencer (j.spencer) on: Reception Blog

We are enjoying our work on Jack and the beanstalk.

This week we are making salt dough giants, making giants sandcastles, practising cutting to make our own story map.

We are working on our high frequency words by fishing for the fish and reading the words. There are lots of fish in our pond.

We have the giants castle, and the children are using the figures to act out the story.

We have also been doing some writing describing the giant saying what he is and how he looks.

We have also looked at a picture of Jack and been giving descriptions of how Jack looks.

For our maths lessons this week we have been recapping addition and using number lines or counting on to work out the answers to our number sentences.

Last week of home Learning WC 01.03.21

Janet Spencer (j.spencer) on: Reception Blog

We have had another busy fun filled week of home learning.

This week in phonics we have learnt 3 new phonemes and 2 new tricky words.  We are now very close to the end of phase 3.

We learnt, oi, ure, ear  and the tricky words so and said

In maths we have looked at the number 9 and different ways of making 9, as well as square numbers, 1,4,9 and begun our work on sharing.

In topic we have introduced our new question:

Are all life cycles the same?

We have looked at what life cycles are, what the human life cycle is like and then learnt about the life cycle of the butterfly.

We have also read the story of the Cautious Caterpillar and talked about things we might be worried about.  Some children are worried their uniform wouldn't fit or that their new shoes might hurt their feet, but generally everyone is excited to be going back to school on Monday and seeing all their friends.

We even had a special guest open one of our life lessons and Shambhavi was so excited about it she wrote a special note for her dad.

Home learning WC 22.02.21

Janet Spencer (j.spencer) on: Reception Blog

We have all had a great half term and come back to live lessons ready to learn.

In literacy we have written our news about the half term and made sure we used smiley sentences

Then we talked about our pets and how we have to look after them to keep them safe and well.

Then we have ended the week learning about how to keep ourselves safe on the internet, and made posters to remind ourselves.

We also looked at our school agreement.

In Phonics we have learnt 2 new phonemes, ur and ow.

We also learnt 2 new tricky words, they and all. We loved playing tricky word hunt and found words all over pour homes.  We also lost a few words we couldn't find any more.  We are still looking.

In maths we have been learning about measuring and using the language of measure.  We tried not to use big and small but used, Long, longer longest, short shorter, shortest and tall, taller, tallest.

We compared the size of things then had fun measuring using bricks.

Well also learnt about tallying so we could see what our favourite pets where.

What a brilliant week. We are seeing more sunshine and spotting signs of spring.

One more week or home learning then maybe we can all meet back in school.
