Many children and adults enjoy playing computer games on a PC, console, tablet or phone and whilst many of these contain fun, educational and exciting content, parents still need to be aware of the games and websites their children are accessing.

There are many different consoles and devices available and whilst a child may be playing an age appropriate game, a lot of these can also access online features such as chat facilities and multi-player gaming.

Age restrictions

As gaming is not just restricted to consoles with children and young people accessing games on smartphones and tablets and also through social networking sites, it is important to keep an eye on the age ratings of all games.

Every computer game is given an age rating based on the content of the game.  For primary age children, games rated PEGI 3 and PEGI 7 are suitable in terms of game play content. Those with higher ratings of PEGI 12, 16 or 18 may contain violent scenes or other game play which is not suitable for children under 12.

Many popular games played by children are rated above the age of the child. Fortnite
