I am sharing with you all a really exciting opportunity for our pupils and school.
Explore Learning are holding a competition for young writers across the country.
The theme his year is "hidden talents".
All your child has to do is write a 500 word story featuring a hidden talent and submit it through the link below.
https://www.explorelearning.co.uk/writersawards/
The competition is open to children from the ages of 4 - 14 and is being judged by Radio DJ Greg James!
There will be a winner chosen from KS1, KS2 and KS3 - then an over all winner.
Each winner will receive, An iPad, an Apple Pencil and keyboard for the iPad and £250 towards an experience day!
The overall winner will also receive a MacBook Pro, an extra £750 towards an experience day, a special celebrity guest visit for school plus £500 worth of books for our school library!
This competition is not compulsory. Although we would love it if a lot of the pupils took part.
We will be sharing information and ideas about it in class to inspire everyone.
Who knows! We might have the next Roald Dahl sat in one of our classrooms right now!
Happy Writing!

Summer Reading Challenge
Janet Spencer (j.spencer) on: Reading Blog
Hello all,
Please find below the information about this year's Summer Reading Challenge.
This year's reading challenge from The Reading Agency will celebrate funny books, happiness and laughter. Children taking part in the challenge will join the Silly Squad, an adventurous team of animals who love to have a laugh and get stuck in to all different kinds of funny books!
Children can register for the challenge through the Leeds Library website )linked here), The Library Service recommend that children read 6 books over the summer holidays but they can set their own target when they sign up, which can be changed at any time.
Normally at this time of year Leeds Librarians would be busy visiting primary school assemblies to promote the Summer Reading Challenge. As things are different this year we have three resources for you to access from home:
- Watch this short film from our Librarians, Elaine Hardy and Matt Stoppard, introducing the Summer Reading Challenge and sharing useful resources to help children stay reading during the summer.
- We have created a silly and interactive Twine resource to use in classrooms and homes to promote the challenge and encourage children to sign up. The Twine resource has been created using images from our Leeds Libraries Special Collections, we hope you enjoy it. We recommend saving the Twine resource from the google drive link and opening it using a Chrome browser.
- Finally, Mark and Sam from CBBC launch this years Summer Reading Challenge and introduce the Silly Squad in this promo video on The Reading Agency's YouTube channel!
Also launching at our Sign-up Saturday is our fantastic Silly Squad collection of eBooks and eAudio books on Borrowbox. This collection of books can be downloaded by multiple people at the same time so you don’t have to wait for the book you want. Look out for stories by Laura Ellen Anderson (this year's Summer Reading Challenge illustrator) as well as Tony Ross, Jacqueline Wilson, Konnie Huq, Russell Brand and Frank Cottrell-Boyce. You can also browse our full range of junior and teen eBooks and eAudio books on Borrowbox, as well as our comics and graphic novels, suitable for all ages. If you don't already have a library account you can join online, please contact libraryenquiries@leeds.go.uk or 0113 378 5005 if you have any issues.
Over the summer holidays we will have lots of online Silly Squad activities across our Facebook and Twitter pages including; theatre, storytellers, craft activities, Code Club and Lego Club. We’ll also be regularly updating our Leeds For Learning Resource Page and Leeds Libraries website with Summer Reading Challenge information over the coming weeks.
Hope you can all take part!
